Yr Elenydd . . . . in memory of Dave Pountney
315km cycling event starting from Bushley. Controls at Shobdan., Builth Wells., Abergwesyn., Tregaron., Rhayader. and Sutton St. Nicholas.. A further reincarnation of a true classic audax event. New grand depart/arrivee, but the important 'Elenydd' section remains intact.
With a grand depart from Bushley, the route adopts a fast ride up to the first control (Hotspur cafe) Shobdon aerodrome. You then continue through the marches and into Wales. Riders have a free control at Builth Wells at any of the numerous cafes/shops. Continue west into ever more isolated villages, and at Buelah turning onto the lane to the next control at Abergwesyn- a cup of tea and a piece of cake to help you 'dance up the Devilís Staircase, gambol over the Gamallt & cruise over the Cenglau' and finally dropping down to Tregaron. The team at Tregaron bowls club will look after your catering requirements. You're now roughly one third around Yr Elenydd mountain range. There's now a bit of a break from the hills, so a chance to prepare for roads around Ponyrhydygroes. You'll soon find yourself cycling through the lead mine's in the Cwmystwyth valley. The final part of Yr Elenydd as you drop down into the next control at Rhayader. There's now a rolling section back through the Marches and into Herefordshire for a final control at Sutton St. Nicholas. The final stage is along easy to navigate roads back to arrivee at Bushley.
