The North Wessex Downs
200km cycling event starting from Cleve RFC, The Hayfields, Bristol. Controls at Marlborough: Mercer's cafe, Hilliers Yard, Hurstbourne Tarrant: general store next to Texaco garage and Pewsey: Applecart Cafe, plus 2 information controls. This ride starts on the East side of Bristol and explores the North Wessex Downs through Wiltshire and Berkshire.
From the start the route heads east into Wiltshire through Malmesbury and onto Minety before turning south to the Marlborough and North Wessex Downs where you climb Clyffe Pypard followed by, Hackpen Hill. You will have sight of one Wiltshire’s white horses. Cross the ancient Ridgeway path at the top of Hackpen before a lovely run into Marlborough and the first control at Mercer’s Cafe. The next stage follows the B road to Hungerford and then on to minor roads and the climb at Combe Gibbet, the replica gibbet can be seen on your right as you crest the hill (the original was erected in 1676, gruesome history fans can find details here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combe_Gibbet). The climb features in Simon Warren’s top 100 UK cycling climbs and on a good day there are stunning views in all directions. There’s a great descent to Hurstbourne Tarrant where you can pick up a receipt at the garage store before turning west toward Bristol. The final control is at the Applecart Cafe in Pewsey where a decent feed will fuel you for the 65km back to Bristol, you should catch site of another horse at Alton Barnes. If you need a top up of food or drink then there are shops, cafes and pubs in the village of Lacock.
