Tour of Rheged
202km cycling event starting from St Herbert's Windermere. Controls at Levens Village Shop, Middleton-in-Teesdale and Alston, plus 1 information control. Some little known roads, others more familiar. Choppy lanes, fast flats and long climbs. Woods, fields, moorland, lakes and autumnal fells. A bit of everything.
After the Romans went (what did they ever do for us?) the local Cumbric-speaking Britons set up their own kingdom of Rheged, centred on present day Cumbria. It didn't last long, being overun by the Anglo-Saxons from Northumbria and then by the Scandanavians from the sea. Between them they left the majority of place names in the area, but Lyth, Leven, Tees, Penrith and other place names from the days of Rheged can still be found on this physically and toponymically challenging ride. BYO sleeping bag in the hall the night before the event, pies, pickles and a free history lecture after the ride.
