Humber Bridge 200
202km cycling event starting from Welton, East Yorkshire. Controls at Sheriff Hutton and Keadby, plus 5 information controls. This event leaves picturesque Welton heading north into the Yorkshire Wolds before turning south to cross the rivers Ouse and Trent, finishing with a ride over the longest cycleable suspension bridge in the world!
The Humber Bridge is currently the 8th longest single span suspension bridge in the world - unless you are a cyclist. None of the other bridge-builders have given the space for cycling that the designers of the Humber Bridge did. With cycle/footpaths either side riders get an excellent view in both directions unimpeded by the traffic. It is always worth pausing in any crossing to soak in the scale of engineering involved in linking Lincolnshire to Yorkshire. This new audax from VeloClub 167 and St Helen's Church starts in the picturesque village of Welton, home to the famous 10 mile Time Trial route, V718 with its blistering fast section of A63 dual carriageway - although thankfully we don't need to use it, instead our ride heads into the quiet country lanes of the East Riding of Yorkshire and the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds. There are many beautiful villages on the route including Thixendale and Sheriff Hutton. Then riders get a rest from climbing thanks to the flatlands east of York - riding south through Melbourne crossing the river Ouse to reach Hook. More flat and quiet lanes take the end of the route over the river Trent before finishing with scenic views of the Humber Bridge and a crossing of the estuary; returning to Welton.
